I would like to express my interest in becoming an online adjunct faculty member at your institutution. I am a native English speaker, as well as a fluent Korean speaker. I grew up in multicultural environments in the setting of British International schools since I was 5. My friends came from Europe, India, South East Asia, Australia, East Asia etc. This gives me the added advantage of being able to meld into various cultural environments with ease. My teaching experience has shown me that my students warm up to me for these reasons. I believe that this gives me an edge over monocultural white American teachers, as well as bi-cultural Korean American teachers. I know what it is like to study English from the vantage point of an outsider, so I can fully empathize with non-native English students who are learning ESL. As a bilingual and bicultural person, I've been "in the trenches" and know what struggles, fears and aspirations an ESL learner faces. As such, I feel that I'm in an advatageous position to address these crucial issues. I understand the struggles and triumphs that are inherent in learning another language. It inspires me to feel a genuine empathy for non-native English learners. I have a deeper understanding of what the student is going through, because I have been there myself. It also allows me to be a more effective teacher. I hold a TESOL Master's Degree from University of Birmingham, England and am currently a PhD candidate in Applied Linuistics there. I have over 11 years of TESOL based teaching experience and have taught at universities in both South Korea and the US. I have also taught European, South American and Asian adult students at the Rennert New York Language and at major Korean corporations such as Samsung and SK Telecom. Most recently, I gained invaluable online English teaching experience coaching international software Engineers with an online language academy. As such, I am very familiar with the attitudes and approaches thar both Europeans and Asians bring towards their ESL learning. I have also co-authored an ESL text book for university students that was used at several South Korean universities. In addition, I previously worked at a Korean bank in Manhattan, NY for over seven years. This invaluable experience gave me first hand experience of Korean corporate culture. But the most important thing I have to offer is my compassion for my students and my love of teaching. I gave up a stable and lucrative career in banking, because I realized that teaching was my passion. If I am accepted by your institution, I will focus on upgrading the conversational, writing and reading skills of your students.
