Basic concepts in Chemical Reactions and Compounds:

Types of changes in your surroundings:

There are various types of changes, we can observe in our surroundings. Some changes involve the change in the physical state whereas some changes occur with breaking or making of chemical bonds.

Chemical changes or chemical reactions:

The chemical changes occur with the formation of new chemical bonds and the breaking of old ones. These are also called chemical reactions.

Types of chemical reactions:

On the basis of the process involved during chemical changes; chemical reactions can be classified as:

  • Combination or synthesis reaction
  • Decomposition reaction
  • Displacement reaction
  • Combustion reaction
  • Redox reaction

Exothermic and endothermic reactions:

On the basis of energy change involved during chemical reactions, they can be classified as exothermic and endothermic reactions.

An exothermic reaction releases a certain amount of energy in the form of heat or light during the chemical reaction.  On the contrary, an endothermic reaction furnishes with the absorption of energy. The energy profile diagrams are used to explain the exothermic and endothermic reactions.

Combination reaction:

It involves the combination of more than one compounds to form one compound. For example; a combination of Mg with oxygen forms MgO.

2 Mg  + O₂   → 2 MgO

Decomposition reactions:

These reactions are reverse reactions of combination  reactions that convert the compound into its respective components.

Displacement reactions:

These are the most common reactions of inorganic compounds. They can be single and double displacement reactions on the basis of compounds present in the reaction. Neutralization and precipitation reactions are the best example of displacement reactions.

Combustion reactions:

The burning of chemical compounds in the presence of an excess  oxygen is called combustion reaction. The combustion of organic compounds forms carbon dioxide and water as the final product.

Redox reaction:

A reaction in which both oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously is called a Redox reaction.  Oxidation leads to increase in the oxidation number whereas reduction leads to decrease in the oxidation number due to the gain of electrons.

Chemical equation:

The representation of chemical reaction in terms of molecular formulae of reactant and product molecules is called a chemical equation. A balanced chemical equation is used in the prediction of product and also in stoichiometry to predict the amount of product formed or amount of reactant consumed. The number of atoms at both sides of a chemical equation must be the same in a balanced chemical equation.

Sample Questions & Answers on Chemical Reactions & Compound:

Q.1. Which of the metal ions/ atoms get reduced in the below chemical reaction?

Answer: a) Reduction is decrease in the oxidation number by the gain of the electron.

Q.2 Identify the type of reaction:

a) Combination reaction
b) Precipitation reaction
c) Neutralization reaction
d) Redox reaction

Answer: b) It must be a precipitation reaction as barium sulfate forms a white precipitate during this reaction.

Q.3 Predict the type of reaction with the help of the given energy profile diagram.

Answer: In the given energy profile diagram, the energy level of the product is lower than reactant. It indicates that the enthalpy of products is lesser than the reactant molecules. Thus, we can interpret that the reaction completes with the loss of energy  that decreases the energy level of product molecules. Thus, it must be an Exothermic reaction.

Understand types of chemical reactions and how they break and form bonds between atoms from top solvers:

Chemical reactions are happening almost everywhere. There are common chemical reactions taking place during photosynthesis, occurring in the stomach, or rusting of iron and even when hydrogen and oxygen form water. Infact, we get to see reactions in the lab in a test tube but if we look closely these are taking place everywhere in the world.

When a set of chemical substances undergo a chemical change to form a different substance, we call it a chemical reaction. Now, you notice how our day to day life revolves around chemical reactions and why it is so important to understand the topic. For School and college level students sometimes it can be tricky to understand different types of chemical reactions and how to balance advanced chemical equations.
