My resume shows that I have worked as an Actuarial Analyst. Prior to that I worked as a Statistician and a Programmer Analyst for a number of years before going back to school to pursue a graduate degree in Management Science: Operations Research and Applied Statistics. This industry experience has only made me a better teacher as it helps me assist the student to see the practical application of their book knowledge.
In addition, I have traveled extensively and have worked in many areas of the world helping me to understand and adapt to new cultures and learning styles. This is helpful in the online teaching environment since many students are “non-traditional” and come from a variety of backgrounds. It has also helped me to see the need to take the initiative to employ new teaching methods to help ensure student success.
In China, for example, while teaching math and business courses at a collaborative programme between the U.K’s Staffordshire University and Chengdu’s University of Technology I noticed that the students, who were all native Mandarin Chinese speakers, were having difficulties learning the concepts in English without a workbook to assist them. Since a Math book for non-native English speakers had never been produced before I asked for permission to design and write one. After the introduction of the workbook to the student body student test scores jumped more than 50%. This workbook has been used by the programme for many years following it’s completion.
I'm a first generation American born to Jamaican immigrants. I've always found myself caught between cultures and have been often been fascinated by similarities and differences. To this end I enjoy traveling and interacting with the native population to whatever extent possible. In addition to traveling my hobbies include reading, cooking, cleaning, exercise. I also do volunteer work as a teacher and counsellor. Trying to help the world to improve one student at a time.
